From the Archives: Early 1980s Student Handbook

So much has changed in the last three decades, from hairstyles to advertising. This early 1980s Dundalk Regional Technical College student handbook is an interesting insight into how much they have changed. There's lots more photographs and pages from it in our photo gallery, which can be accessed by logging in or registering. Registration is free and easy so why not drop in and see some more treasures from our shared past here at DkIT.

Particular thanks to Lorraine Mulligan of DkIT Library for kindly sharing this and other publications and photographs.

DkIT Graduate Clive Gilmore and Hanley Energy Receive Prestigious Award

Clive Gilmore, a graduate of DkIT's Department of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering, is CEO/Co-Founder of Hanley Energy who have won the Best in the Cleanweb/IT Category at the Global Cleantech Cluster Association (GCCA) 2013 Late Stage Awards. This is a prestigious award that ranks Hanley Energy among the best of GCCA's 10,000 member companies around the world.

Clive graduated from the B.E. in Electrical and Electronic Systems programme here at DkIT. This is a "hands-on" practical degree in Electronic Engineering with specialist options in Design, Renewable Energy, and Electrical Engineering. There is a particular emphasis on project work where students build real working products such as remote controlled robots, computer or sound systems.

Hanley Energy is based in Co. Meath and has recently opened offices in Texas and Los Angeles. Specialising in the design, supply and support of customised energy & critical power management solutions, the company’s world-leading innovation prevents data centres switching from drawing power from generators instead of utility-provided electricity in areas of unstable electricity supply. Using a touchscreen interface, it allows operators to reduce their critical switchgear costs and reduces the risk of downtime – which can cost up to €4,200 per minute.

Clive and fellow director Denis Nordon (fourth and third from right respectively in picture below) received the award on behalf of Hanley Energy at an award ceremony  at Corporate Cleantech Venture Day November 20, 2013 in Lahti, Finland.

Well done to Clive and all at Hanley Energy on their great achievement!

Seeking to Build a Vibrant Alumni Community

Aidan McCourt, a DkIT graduate in Communications in Creative Media, has recently begun an internship in the Communications Office as an Alumni Assistant. His work will in particular focus upon building links with the alumni of the college. DkIT is over forty years old and many thousands have graduated from the wide range of courses that have been offered over the years. Aidan will be working to maintain and develop already existing points of contact for graduates such as the alumni.dkit.ie website and to explore other means of encouraging participation in a vibrant alumni community.

Many who graduated from DkIT will have a wealth of knowledge and resources connected with the proud history of DkIT, both more recently and going back to previous decades. If you have old or not-so-old photographs, artifacts or ideas on how the alumni community might be enhanced and enriched, Aidan would be delighted to hear from you and draw on your personal recollections and experience. He can be contacted at Ext. 2994, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or just drop into the communications office P1181.

Together we can continue to share in the rich history of Dundalk Institute of Technology and build an alumni community to which our graduates of all ages feel they belong. In an era of life-long learning it is to be earnestly desired that our students and graduates will see their engagement with DkIT as a life-long and life-enhancing experience. Our alumni community is an ideal home for that shared past and shared future.

Congratulations to all who are conferring today (and yesterday) at Dundalk Institute of Technology. you worked hard and deserve the attention!

Over 1500 students are conferring this year, and we are eager to get details from these students on what happens next and how they got on while at DkIT. You may have seen Amanda from the Careers Office around, trying to hijack students and get them to the the Graduates Survey. This survey provides critical data from outgoing students each year, which can be analyzed and used to help future students.

If you did not fill in the survey on the day, you can do so online in the coming days by visiting http://www.dkit.ie/careers/survey2013. All graduates who complete the survey are automatically entered in a draw for a 250 euro voucher!
